What if you don’t fail – Zika Nwaise

Hello guys, trust we are already in the weekend spirit. I just thought to give us something to chew on over the weekend, I hope you find it inspiring. So many times, I hear people say, ‘What if it doesn’t work?’, ‘What if I don’t get it right?’ or ‘What if it doesn’t come out right?’. But they hardly say, ‘What if it does work?’ or ‘What if it becomes the best?’. How would we know if we do not try. I was once in a state of dilemma about either taking a risk and going into a particular business or just keeping my money in a fixed deposit account and watch it grow gradually. After so much conflicting opinions from friends and family, a dear friend told me I had two options; either go after what I wanted or remain where I was, and that of these two options, only one could guarantee a different result. And then it struck me, I had never taken the risk of starting up anything but had always admired my friends whose businesses were blooming, so I decided to take a risk. Now what I’m trying to say is, let us not allow ...

Don’t be Laid-back!!! – Zika Nwaise

In a race, there is always a first person who is usually ahead of a second person and on and on to the very last person.  The person in the first position while in the race does not relent because he knows that being ahead of the next person does not mean he cannot be caught up with and overtaken so he has to run even harder and more strategicallyto maintain being at the first position. Many times, I hear people say… ‘At last I have the job, now I can rest’ but I would say….  This is not the time for you to rest, it’s a time for you to buckle up and aim higher. Getting a job, is only a platform to aim for the next level, so have it at the back of your mind that you are only a step away from those who are searching for jobs and there’s a huge possibility that they could catch up with you. I hear people say “I have been with this organization for a long time but they just recruited someone who is now earning more than I do. Why is thisthe case?” Have you ever asked ...

Would You Hire You? – Zika Nwaise

Some time ago, I had a chat with a long lost friend who told me about how she has been unable to secure a job and the only jobs around were low income jobs, so she had to settle for a job she “wasn’t proud of”. She told me about her endless search for a job until she finally gave up, consoling herself with the phrase – ‘There are no jobs’. I know at this point, you may be saying ‘oh yes that is true’ but I want you to take a minute to study this. If you had an organization and wanted to recruit staff, would you entrust your organization into the hands of someone you are not sure of his or her competency? Someone with no experience, whose resume looks laid back? If there was an opening for a ‘little or no experience’ position and you had two people applying for the job: One who has no experience at all on the job and shows no capacity to handle the position but is willing to learn… One who has very little experience but has demonstrated that they can handle that position with examples and illustrations of the things ...

The Value of Self Impact – Zika Nwaise

Over the years, I have realized as an HR person that people stand to gain a lot when they make a will to learn for themselves. Many times when we organize interviews, we meet different calibres of people ranging from the ones who are prepared to the ones who can never be ready except for an intervention in their lives. But in all these, I noticed that eighty five percent of the ones who stand out are the ones who usually attend trainings, conferences, programmes, seminars and even volunteer jobs. So many times I wonder why, but I have come to discover that ‘you are what you hear’.  These people no longer need to read question and answers from the internet for an interview because they have an experience for whatever questions they are being asked, they have groomed themselves to the extent that they don’t depend on other people’s opinion about a particular issue. So… why don’t we make out time to build ourselves instead of depending on others, there are some free reasonable trainings out there looking for people to fill up the spaces. Let’s all make an effort this year to impact ourselves for ourselves’ sake. ...

Now what I’m trying to say is, let us not allow any pessimistic thought stop us from achieving our dreams, let’s make an effort to try the ‘other’ option, that is, do things a different way in order to get ...

Hard Work and Smart Work – Zika Nwaise

Over the weekend, I attended a training and I thought to share with us some of the things I took home from that day. One of the facilitators spoke to us about the ‘value of a wasted minute’. He said,”There are two types of people in this world; There are those who are always extremely busy, yet do not achieve productivity. These type of people are the ones who are always actively doing something at every particular point in time. You can never call them lazy because they can never be caught idle. They take time to do lots of unimportant things and end up not achieving anything, because all they do is ‘almost get work done’. The second type of people are those who do the things that should be done as soon as possible, then spend the rest of their time doing other things. This set of people can never be called lazy either, but might not be actively up and about like the first group, but you know what, these people are always more productive. The difference between these two groups is, they both work hard but the second group works smart. So, I ask you BIE readers, when you wake ...

Why Be Average When Excellence Is Possible? – Zika Nwaise

Hello dear BIE readers, I trust you are all doing good! I know you all must have missed me(as I did you) but don’t worry, I have prepared something special to make up for all the time I was away. It’s a clip from my autobiography, a story of how I learnt to do more and go the extra mile. I learnt so much from that experience and I thought to share with us- who knows? I just might be helping someone out. Read and be inspired. When I was 20 years old, I joined a department in church and I was so zealous and enthusiastic that I would jump at everything I was asked to do.If I was given a task with a deadline of a week later, I would return with feedback as early as a day or two after. I continued like this for months and was expecting that in very short period I would be promoted in that department.Unfortunately I wasn’t. I remained in that position for about two years and would always be commended with comments like “Good job girl”!Or given a ‘thumbs up’ for doing well. I wasn’t satisfied with that so I started ...

Giving Back: A Ladder for Personal and Professional Success – Zika Nwaise

I was shocked when I heard from a friend that Cristiano Ronaldo, being a philanthropist and a blood donor, decided never to have a tattoo. It is not because he doesn’t want to, but because he is a regular blood donor and blood donors are not allowed to have tattoos. What strikes me most of all is the fact that he sacrifices this much, being just a volunteer, to give so much back to his society. Sometimes, we might just need to give back to our society by doing things for free. It might not always be money, it could be our time, or even ourselves (like Ronaldo). Whichever way, giving back is always beneficial and not just to the recipients. Here are some good reasons to volunteer 1) You acquire new skills Doing a volunteer job or giving your time to helping and making an impact in the society gives you interesting and challenging opportunities or experiences that could be added to your resume. That newly acquired skill could be what you future employer might be looking for. 2) It increases your self esteem Doing things for others gives you an increased sense of self-esteem and greater self-worth. Knowing ...

Six Unique Facts of Integrity

One day, a friend said to me… “Let us write 8:00am on the attendance register, no one will know”. But I thought about it, and decided to write the exact time I got there which was about 8:30am. Unfortunately, there was a major issue in the office and those who got to the office between 8:00 – 8:15am were being interrogated. I just smiled. Sometimes, we think it’s better to go the easy way, but it’s not always profitable. The single most important quality you can ever develop that will improve every area of your life is Integrity. Integrity is the foundation of a good character. Integrity is honesty, and to be honest with others means you have to be honest with yourself. Here are some reasons on why Integrity should be a core value for you. 1. It makes you stand out:  People tend to depend on you when you are a man of your word in an environment where being straight forward is scarce. 2. It makes you successful:  People of integrity are honest people and honest people are people who do things right. Doing the right things would take you far as it creates a good reputation for you and your business. 3. It makes you a good leader ...
