“Course Of Study Or Passion?” – Tokunbo Fasoro

I kept watching the photographer during a photo-shoot and all I could see was passion. Ironically, he came into our office quite ill. He said he had a headache and his body ached but during the shoot it seemed like an untruth. It looked to me that he was not even conscious of how he felt and he just kept going; climbing stools, kneeling and lying down to shoot. All I could see was a guy that is extremely passionate about what he does. I then asked him a question? “You seem to be very happy with what you do” and he said to me, “I enjoy every moment of it” He went on to tell me that he studied Microbiology and graduated with a second class upper, but unfortunately, Microbiology is not his thing. “I am a very creative person who gets pleasure from designing stuff” he said. Some people believe there are special individuals who are self-made because they are highly successful – I totally disagree with that. My simple belief is that they succeeded because they tapped into and unleashed their potentials for excellence. Being different is totally okay, in fact it is not just okay, it is essential and what makes you who you are. Sometimes people are intimidated by the fact that you are different, but the people who really matter will love you for your unique personality. Some years back during my undergraduate days in the university, I woke up one night trying to decipher what makes some people innovators, trend setters and every other person. I discovered that the innovators are all different and they see the world differently and basically obsessed with a passion of taking the world from as it is to how it should be. I was shocked when I heard from a friend that Cristiano Ronaldo, being a philanthropist and a blood donor, decided never to have a tattoo. It is not because he doesn’t want to, but because he is a regular blood donor and blood donors are not allowed to have tattoos. What strikes me most of all is the fact that he sacrifices this much, being just a volunteer, to give so much back to his society. Sometimes, we might just need to give back to our society by doing things for free. It might not always be money, it could be our time, or even ourselves (like Ronaldo). Whichever way, giving back is always beneficial and not just to the recipients. Here are some good reasons to volunteer 1) You acquire new skills Doing a volunteer job or giving your time to helping and making an impact in the society gives you interesting and challenging opportunities or experiences that could be added to your resume. Not very long ago, preparation for an interview required people to diligently arrange their academic transcripts right down to the certificates they won during extracurricular activities in schools and college, in a neat folder with crisp white A4 size papers of their resume stapled in proper alignment with each other. “Every important document must be in print” was an advice given by elders in my family. Jim Ovia Foundation Scholarship Program

The Jim Ovia Scholars Program was founded since 1998. It is fully funded by Mr. Jim Ovia to provide financial aid to outstanding Nigeria youths. The scholarship was previously known as the MUSTE scholarship. Eligble awardees are supported for their undergraduate and graduate study for the duration of their program and includes tuition and maintenance allowances. The scheme offers an average of 100 opportunities each year for new applicants while renewing applicants are supported annually, conditional on meeting all eligible requirements of the scholarship. Since October 2010, Mr. Ovia has invested over 100 Million Naira in the program to support 1500 beneficiaries and counting. In establishing the Jim Ovia Scholarship, Mr. Ovia hoped to create a network of future leaders within Nigeria who can compete globally with their peers, bring new ideas, creativity and are committed to improving the lives and circumstances of people in their respective communities.
