How to Discover What You’re Passionate About

How to Discover What You’re Passionate About

A common theme in most writing on goal setting is the need to follow your passions.  Do the things that make you want to get up early in the morning.  There’s only one thing missing: What if you don’t have any passions? I’m sure everyone on this planet has interests.  But that’s not the same thing.  Enjoying playing video games isn’t the same as spending thousands of hours designing your own.  Your passion has to be something you would work exceptionally hard for. So what do you do, if there is nothing you feel that engaged about? The Way to Start Isn’t With a Survey… A lot of career guidance involves measuring your current skills and personality, and then deciding what you would be most suited for.  I don’t like this approach because people are complex.  And any test will ultimately be a gross simplification of what’s important to you and what you like to do. I once heard a story about a wealthy woman who was looking for a husband.  She invested over $20,000 on a series of psychological surveys to match her with potential candidates.  She met individually with the dozen candidates that were her best match.  After ...

Your Habits Make You Or Break You

Habit

Article By Opeyemi Komolafe HEY……..STOP THAT!! Yes, you……stop it!!!! What is that thing, now a habit that is sabotaging the achievement of your goals? What is that activity that you love so much that is a hindrance to you taking the timely and calculated steps towards the achievement of your life’s purpose. They are not always bad things. They might appear to be harmless little actions or habits that make you do the opposite of pursuing your life’s goal. For me, it is television. I loooooooooove TV!!!!! I always tell myself that it helps me unwind and relax after a long hard day so the hours I spend watching tv are slotted under the section of ‘work/life balance’ or ‘helping Ope relax and prevent her from pulling her hair from the roots.’ Watching tv is not necessarily bad, but its effects on me became glaring after a recent decision by my husband that cable network would not be subscribed to during the school term. You see, my daughter picked some of my habits and always found it difficult to focus on school work as long as a tv is switched on in the house. This drove my husband’s insistence on ...

THE POWER OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT I met a woman at a salon and we got chatting. She was way older than I was, but we just connected and we began to converse. She is  a  senior manager in one of the  most prestigious Oil and Gas company in Nigeria.  We discussed on how she was always picked by her organization to represent the organization all over the world, attending and delivering speeches in high profile meetings. I asked her how she started out, and I wasn’t surprised when she mentioned PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. When she told me how much she had invested in personal development, training, workshops and career development courses. She said anytime she was out of the country on holidays, she would look for a training to attend and over the years. She had acquired a lot of knowledge, skill and exposure that her organization had leveraged on, till date.   TIPS ON WHY PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT IS KEY Opportunity waits for no one: Opportunity meets preparation. If opportunity comes and you are not ready, it moves to the next person, so invest as much as you can in yourself.   Always try to improve on a skill or learn something new: A ...

‘All fingers are not equal, must yours be the shortest?’ Tokunbo Fasoro

The first time I heard that statement from one of my mentors, I laughed and laughed but it’s just the honest truth. A lot of people find themselves in situations that look so difficult and a lot of people just give up at that point. I was chatting with a lady who was 34 years old and was battling with low self-esteem. She had dropped out of school and she said to me “I don’t even know where to start”. Given up on being someone great, she kept blaming her inadequacies on her past and has accepted the back seat position in life. I went on to share a book I read with her titled ‘Woman of Persistent Faith’ by Akiesha Keke Taylor , who after going through so much in life, didn’t give up, found her feet and decided to start all over again. Today, her story is impacting and changing lives. Keke refused to remain in that situation; she fought hard until she got out of it. I love the story of Jabez in the Bible whose mother named him pain, because she went through so much pain having him. As he grew, the name reflected on his life, but one day he decided that “NO! Enough is enough”. ...

CHANGE: A COMMON ENEMY – Stanley Awelewa

In our journey through life, we always aspire for greatness but we are often faced with several challenges. At one point or the other, you may come across people who appear to want to sabotage your growth. Why? It is simple, not because they are bad or evil, but because they are afraid of change. They are afraid because your change will force them to change, and they feel they either can’t change or don’t want to change. They will try to hold you back (sometimes unconsciously) in an attempt to keep everything familiar. In their minds, they are trying to protect you, but are they? No, they are not. They are only really looking out for themselves. You must realize that for effective change and growth, nothing stays the same. To do a new thing, you must empower yourself, grow and evolve. You must grow into a different (and hopefully better) version of yourself. For you to see those beautiful wings in the sky, the caterpillar must change (a complete metamorphosis) into the butterfly. Of course when it flies, it leaves the tree which has housed and nurtured its cocoon behind. In the same way, when we evolve into ...
