Within you lies an opportunity to be a star

I was talking to a friend /colleague and he went on and on about how unappreciated he felt at work and how not belonging to a cabal at work made him continuously viewed as an average performer yet he goes above and beyond with his work. We had a lengthy discussion and some salient action points on how he could work through the barriers he was currently going through … I thought to share cause someone here could find it useful. Opportunity always follow value…it may not come now, it’s definitely lurking somewhere in the corner. When you increase your value, you create opportunities. Adding value is the way you appear, prepare and organize…it is found in your execution, it’s how you understand the needs and exceed them not just meeting the expectations of your customers (internal and external)   There is no such thing as job security…the only way to secure the future is to become more valuable. He was totally demotivated so we agreed that one of the best ways to fall in love with your job again is to remember the first day you were picked among others…look for ways to add value to every task, assignment ...

4 Tips To Help You Fit Into Your New Job

workplace

Article By Tokunbo Fasoro Shortly after graduation, I got my first job. I found it difficult blending into workplace, especially when I was just coming from an academic environment, the job was in Lagos Nigeria which was also a new environment for me and I had to learn a whole lot by myself. I took some time to study my environment, and I made a friend who had worked in the organization for about 10 years, I could ask him over 10 questions a day. He was a very pleasant person, always happy to respond and put me through. Being a fast learner, the questions began to reduce in number and gradually became none, by then I had fully blended and had began to perform, at the end of the year, I was awarded the staff of the year. Here are a few tips that will help you speed up your blending process Ask questions: It’s a new job; of course you need to understand your environment and the culture of the organization. Aside on boarding and orientation, it is important you ask questions when you are not sure of what to do. I am sure there would be people ...

How to Discover What You’re Passionate About

How to Discover What You’re Passionate About

A common theme in most writing on goal setting is the need to follow your passions.  Do the things that make you want to get up early in the morning.  There’s only one thing missing: What if you don’t have any passions? I’m sure everyone on this planet has interests.  But that’s not the same thing.  Enjoying playing video games isn’t the same as spending thousands of hours designing your own.  Your passion has to be something you would work exceptionally hard for. So what do you do, if there is nothing you feel that engaged about? The Way to Start Isn’t With a Survey… A lot of career guidance involves measuring your current skills and personality, and then deciding what you would be most suited for.  I don’t like this approach because people are complex.  And any test will ultimately be a gross simplification of what’s important to you and what you like to do. I once heard a story about a wealthy woman who was looking for a husband.  She invested over $20,000 on a series of psychological surveys to match her with potential candidates.  She met individually with the dozen candidates that were her best match.  After ...

The Value You Add, Determines How Important You Are

value

Article By Tokunbo Fasoro This lady, who was just hired as an intern was barely two months in my organisation. One day, I had called her into my office to get some ideas from her, since she studied Social Work in school. As we talked, I shared some thoughts with her and the challenges we were facing at that time. She looked at me and said, ‘Sir, I wish I had a million naira now, I would have given you for this project. First off, do not pay my salary for now.’ Hmm. I was surprised. Shortly after, I received a very SHORT notice to PITCH for an opportunity for Access Bank to partner with Project Revamp Africa in our school projects. The notice was VERY short. By the time, I had knowledge of the ‘competition’, I knew that I had to step up my game. She volunteered to help me out. A day to the presentation, we had to work till very late at night. She lives a bit far from the office. The next day, she went with me for the presentation. We had won the first phase, but had a bigger fish to fry. At that time, we ...

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO

What you can do

Aritcle  Zika Nwaise I was out over the weekend and I met a young lady (Tolu) who shared the story of how she discovered her career and grew in it. I thought I should share with BIE readers, it just might inspire someone. Tolu told me how she studied Accounting while she was in University not because she had a passion for it but because she didn’t know exactly what she wanted to do. She wanted to become many things ranging from a fashion designer, to an actress, to a model to becoming a banker. She was still unclear about what she really wanted by the time she graduated from school and went for her National Youth Service Program. After that she was faced with the question “What next?” She started learning how to sew in the meantime instead of mopping about at home. After some time she got a teaching job close to her house which made her happy; ‘happy but not fulfilled’. Happy because the experience gave her the opportunity to learn and impact lives, but unfulfilled because she wanted to do more. Shortly after that, she got a job with a consulting firm and that was where ...

“The Have-to’s” and “The want-to’s”

Have to

I was chatting with a friend and she was talking to me about how the house would be so dirty sometimes and she wouldn’t just feel like cleaning.  She would instead ‘want to’ sleep or watch TV, but unfortunately, it’s something that she ‘has to’ do. As human beings, most times we don’t want to be stressed, we all just want to sleep, have fun, relax, play, hang out, party etc. These are things we ‘want to do’ and there are so many things we wouldn’t feel like doing, especially when it comes to hard work, setting goals, following through, making sacrifices etc. but unfortunately these are things that we ‘have to do’ to remain relevant and be successful. Relating this to careers, goals or even aspirations in life, we just find out that most times we prefer to remain where we are. Quite a lot of people find it difficult getting out of the status quo. Many times you discover a lot of people are limited because they are not intrinsically motivated, most people want to be motivated or pushed by other people before they can take the next big step in their lives which would take them to ...

Be responsible- Remember someone might be watching

Be responsible

Article By Tokunbo Fasoro FB AND IG: @TOKUNBOFASORO Being responsible is a topic I like to talk about all the time because as unbelievable as it may sound, just being responsible can take you to places that you can never imagine you can get to. Responsibility is a skill, you learn it. Someone said the decision to be lazy or get up early everyday is taken by you. It all boils down to your own conscious decision, choosing your own actions and words. Responsibility reflects in the decisions we take in our everyday lives from when you wake up in the morning to take a bath, going to work, how we work and relate with our colleagues, bosses and subordinates, getting early to work, following your schedules, meeting your timelines, ensuring savings, pursuing career and personal development etc. This list can go on and on. Being able to show responsibility in every little thing produces good results. A colleague of mine was sharing with me on how he found in the dustbin an envelope of money in the US dollar currency and he returned it to his boss. He said to me that his boss was surprised the he found ...
