Her Story… First, I must say DO NOT take 30 passports or make 20 photocopies….. Please* DO NOT! *and so I begin. Greetings everyone – especially prospective corps members. I was in your shoes in April, getting ready for camp and all; oh, and to serve my country #important. I was disappointed on two counts though; first I didn’t get posted to the East as I wanted-yeah, you heard right. I wasn’t interested in getting posted to Lagos or its environs and I still got Ogun state but the experience has been good! One morning, while on holiday, I decided to take a walk around the environment. After walking a few meters, I couldn’t but notice how neat and properly maintained all the lawns around looked. I mean ‘ALL’ the lawns! They looked so perfect, it was like I was looking at a picture. Then I noticed something- I saw that 4 different houses had people mowing their lawns, and I saw a woman tendering the flowers in front of her house. I was so amazed that these people paid so much attention to their environment. I saw dedication. I saw discipline. I just kept looking on in admiration. Then I began to think, if only we paid such attention to our lives; in the same way that made this environment look so perfect in areas such as our careers and goals, it could probably become perfect one day . Finding a job with no experience in an economy that is already struggling can seem like a truly daunting task. Don’t get discouraged just because you lack professional experience – there are many things that you can do to increase your employability. Become a volunteer One way to gain experience in a field is to seek out a volunteer position. Many companies do not post volunteer positions online so be sure to ask a specific organisation if they have any volunteer positions available. 1. Do not talk only about yourself Yes, it’s an interview, a.k.a., a Q&A session in which you are expected to answer questions. However, it’s red flag if you talk only about yourself. At least a few times let other people’s names pop up. When asked about your career aspirations, you’d ideally want to throw out the name of some successful person you admire. Or, if you are asked about your previous experience and how it led to where you are now, hopefully mention someone positively —be it an influential colleague, boss, or client—in the answer. 2.
