I heard this statement from Paul Foh, the No 1 salesman in Nigeria. He
is a force to be reckoned with in the area of Sales and Sales’ Training.
It struck a chord in my heart because a lot of us don’t know how to do
this. You often hear people say “After all I did for him/her, look at
what was done to repay me!”
Paul used a tree analogy; when you plant a tree, as long as you have
chosen a good piece of soil and you have made sure it gets all its
nourishment, walk away and plant other trees. It is not normal to plant
a tree and then loiter about remaining connected to the tree, constantly
reminding the tree of your good deed because you are waiting for that
tree to grow and provide shade for you.
When we are instrumental in setting someone up in business, helping
someone get a job, putting someone through school etc, we shouldn’t wait
around and expect to reap from it. God is the rewarder. PLANT THE TREE
(HELP) AND DETACH!!!! That’s where the dignity lies. That’s where the blessing
is guaranteed. That is where the legacy is established.
As human beings, it is only human and subconsciously expected, to reap
where we have sown and to be hurt when there is no harvest, or if the
the harvest is evil, but when you walk away and wipe the slate clean,
you have no expectations and that way, it’s difficult for you to get
By God’s grace I helped a young lady from a challenged background to get
a really good job (some old relationships paid off) recently and she was
so appreciative that I actually started getting embarrassed. In my mind,
I was like “Please don’t use your thank you to cancel out my heavenly
blessing.” But I would be lying if I said my human mind didn’t enjoy the
acknowledgement and appreciation.
A lot of us have been hurt by people we helped in the past and that has
made us reluctant to plant another tree. Believe me, the pain is less
when you have no expectations, that way, looking forward to planting
another tree is just going to be second nature. The reward that matters
is incomparable to the paltry shade that your planted tree can provide
I speak to myself also when I sound it once more…….PLANT A TREE
(HELP A PERSON) AND DETACH!!!
